The war against climate change is a collective responsibility that involves the whole of society. Therefore, to win we need to get active and start talking about climate change and how we can live sustainably.
As part of this commitment, EERUi (Initiative for Empowering Education in Rural and Urban Slums in collaboration with we4all and under the “Trees for Schools” action of the ESD – Education for Sustainable Development program, visited Merrylane Center schools last week for an experiential education and fruit tree planting.
All the students planted new trees and promised to take care of them to make their school more beautiful and fight climate change at the same time.
But public schools, especially in Kenya’s urban slums, lack privileges and access to specialized programs compared to those in developed places.
This is why EERUi (Initiative for Empowering Education in Rural and Urban Slums is expanding the “Trees for Schools” action of the ESD – Education for Sustainable Development programme and in collaboration with we4all it was decided to adopt one of these schools, transform its image and show the children that they too have the potential to change the world and fight climate change.
We started with education to raise awareness about the urgent need to adopt a sustainable lifestyle to reduce the level of carbon in the atmosphere and continued by carrying more than 300 exotic, native and fruit trees which will be planted by the students themselves over the next 3 days.
